Did you hear about the two new .mobi sites, Priceline.mobi and RBC.mobi (biggest bank in Canada)? Not to mention all the other e-commerce .mobi sites. Do you think they are all just going to shut down? If anything, the public will have more and more .mobi sites put in front of their eyeballs, which means the extension will eventually be adopted for most mobile websites. dotMobi sites are being built and launched by major corporations, which is a fact and can't be disputed. But continue bashing .mobi if it makes you feel better, must hurt a little to have missed out on it.
That sucks to speculate on all those .mobi names - only to see them be virtually worthless because .com browsing will be perfectly fine on mobile devices.
Don't get mad....

Opera CEO says DotMobi is a ‘total waste of time’

Jon von Tetzchner, the founder and CEO of Opera Software, recently spoke with SCI FI Tech about the new .mobi domain (DotMobi). He came out swinging against the DotMobi domain, calling it a “total waste of time” and “completely unnecessary.”

The mobile revolution is here and its happening at Apple. And with Android at Google and most importantly with the ip routing at Verisign where their three screen initiative will not recognize dotMOBI without special software installed in the phone and added surcharges.
It's because they are making the real Internet mobile- no extension or developers kit required.
The opportunity in mobile is in the apps and Apple today announced a $100mm prize. Apps is not a domain, it's a web-based application that you double click on and it simplifies life within the confines of the small screen. That's where the money is.
So Apple already has gay bar guides, video diaries, weight loss coaching and management, comparison shopping, taking dictation and spewing out real text, scanning a bottle at a table and getting the wine review, recipes, pick up lines, sales training, French lessons.
It's not about search. It's not about shopping and it's not about typing in a special domain or worse making every company develop special for it. That will NEVER happen.
If it was just a matter of squeezing the dotCOM page in scale.... then you might have been on to something. But it's about new ways for technology to serve and enrich people's lives. That takes more then a domain, a dream, a kit and a bunch of press releases that if you go back and read them and type in the urls they claim as proof of success, you'll have quite an eye-opening experience.
Now as a brand- that is flowers.mobi- the franchise, the uniforms, the ecco-friendly mobile art exhibit/vehicle that makes the deliveries-- there you have a billion business.
btw, your priceline example, priceline interacts with email to make and confirm bids. Most cell phones will not get the email that's on record with the agency.
There's a lot to log in and more to register... plus freq flyer #, seat assignment, rental car loyalty #, hotel loyalty #, corporate discount, and since you have to pay upfront sight unseen, it's real important that you compare rates and features and understand what you agree to (if you don't loose the signal and have to start all again). It's nice they are on MOBI--- but that alone doesn't make it a success.
I really hope that you don't renew your MOBIs and get off to Buy Domains and invest $1000 in one brandable, resalable, dotCOM.
I'll end with some great advice Rick Schwartz gave me when I was in denial...

71% of what. That is wrong. Younger generation will push .mobi not the older generation like yourself. It is not worthless because it is a chance to grab some new land on the internet and build something, a brandable name.
How are your going to stop the .mobi when all the banks are going towards this route. It cant be stopped. Records will be broken for this new realesate grab.

This simply isn't true. There is no special software required to view a .mobi site, nor is there any special development kit required to develop them. Mobile web sites (including .mobi) are developed using the same markup and development tools as any other website (ie. xhtml).
All you need to view a .mobi site is a web browser, which is far from special.

You have just verified what I've been saying all along. That the mobi premise and compliance policy is false advertising.
According to the style guide and discussion of it on developer forums, there seems to be no one solution for various platforms, op systems, browsers and memory. The dotMOBI developers kit is marketed as the magic bullet that ensures a consistent GUI.
Either way the domain itself doesn't deliver the experience nor can assure it any more then dotCOM can and that's what I, and many top analysts (referenced in this thread) are saying is misleading and deceptive marketing practice. The CEO of Opera goes even further to call it a scam. I don't make this news I only report it.
The surcharge and client software upgrade is required for some Verizon phones and plans that have proprietary limited browsing. I will find the source reference but no one is going to pay more for service and upgrade a phone with a very small screen when they know they can trade-up to iPhone and get better browsing and now Exchange server sync for the base rate.

I posted that because I am puzzled about what DTD to use... there seem to be at least four possibilities (is this the right place for this topic?)
1. xhtml basic 1.1 (recommended by dev.mobi guide and WCSS)

2. xhtml mp 1.2 (from Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), supposedly to converge with the above - supposedly very similar)
