Google PS Beta- A Death Blow to Domainers and PPC?

Tonight in checking some of my search positions, I noticed new competition.

Even though I had the first and third listing under my furniture product's keyword, linking to the exact string match domain name and press release about it... above all that were featured "product search" results for other merchants who sold a product you could buy immediately through Google.

It doesn't disclose those prime and preferred listings being sponsored results, but somehow must be a revenue generator. This would negate anything one could previously hope to accomplish with domains or PPC organically or even with AdWords buys.

I learned that they have reinvented Froogle and are running these ads as a test. One blogger writes this week: "The service formerly known as Froogle, Google Product Search, has received one of the most importance updates since it was launched, back in 2002. For some queries like [cell phone] or [scanner], Google detects identical products that are available in multiple online stores and lets you compare prices, read reviews and technical specifications on a single page."

Here's recent Google PR about how Zappo's leveraged the ROI.

The claim is they get this preferred positioning for FREE. If so, why would anyone need to buy a top position ad on the page? This looks like taste test for a domain channel alternative to me. Could this have to do with the Yahoo deal?

Below is a screen cap from a typical page. If you go to Google.com and hit the shopping link, you can back into this. Anyone with any insight please email me or comment and I will not publish if you ask to keep it confidential.
