Direct Navigation Takes Another Hit

Many have feared that the type-in would be replaced by new technologies such as voice search, iPhone Apps and social media sites where friends do the advertising by presenting links to products and services they review. These methods take the shopping out of buying and bypass traditional search navigation.

All of this, as we predicted in 1999 in the Domain Success Primer (yes I keep saying I told you so, but go back and read it and watch the world unfold as outlined 10 years later- starting with its cover "what else could your domain be doing today?")... as did the stealth guy in private forums who wrote in 2000 "who says we'll be using domains in 10 years" and web usability expert Jakob Nielsen who reasoned "The web is young. In 10 years, past behavior will be no indication of future preference."

If that's not enough reason for the BIG BOYS to be dumping the domains with more anxiety then Ryan Seacrest watching Brokeback Mountain, now comes this via SocialMedia.org:

JetBlue and United use Twitter to sell last-minute seats

Corporate Social Media Case Study: JetBlue and United Airlines

JetBlue and United Airlines are offering their Twitter followers discounted, last-minute fares to fill flights that might otherwise take off with a few empty seats.

Using a dedicated Twitter account, @JetBlueCheeps, JetBlue gave away their first “Cheep” in July — a $9 one-way trip from JFK to Nantucket — and has since notified followers about Cheeps every Monday. United Airlines uses their main Twitter account (@UnitedAirlines) to give away their Twitter-only “twares” — with their deals coming at any time for a flight leaving on any day, often available for only an hour or two.

I think we've all had this in our mind for awhile now.

Of course the web will mature with new ways to promote old and new products, services and ideas. But I guarantee you individual business owners, corporations, and others will always need an easy to remember name that fits on a billboard, van, business card etc. that is in their native language. When I type in Hotel.com, Hotel.net, Hotel.org, Hotel.us etc. I would expect to find Hotel information. Even when I type in twitter.com/hotel I better find hotel info or a link to that product or service. Apparently someone has missed the boat at the present time but maybe they'll utilize the premium twitter extension one day. My point is the net is so undeveloped that there is room in every corner for new and creative ideas but the obvious ones still should work and generate large revenues. If anyone wants to give away a premium product or service related domain I would be happy to have it.
Best.

I do not agree with your assessment and prediction, in fact Twitter may be what the generic domains wish for. We just have to wait for Twitter aggregator companies (not PPCs) to provide domainers with widgets updated in real time for this types of time sensitive products. Where do you think users will go to shop ? to JetBlue or UA accounts ? or to a generic domain like MyAirfare.com for example, which will have all the deals instantly posted ? (disclaimer, I own MyAirfare.com).

Steve, I fully agree. As I said in a later post: "Now if all of this seems like a flip flop on an earlier post that warned of direct navigation challenges causing big portfolio owners to re-examine their strategies- I was talking about the idea of maintaining hundreds and thousands of domains to average a couple of dollars a year each in ad revenues.

The market for domains in advertising, branding, SEO, product packaging and in this case "branded entertainment" is bigger then ever."

crinux- I think they'll go to Twitter. That's the point of the article. Millions are already there and the news of the fare deals went around the web and email today so broadly that those in the know know.

The whole point of the web is to eliminate the middle man. First it was the travel agents and now it's about bypassing the affiliates. The margins are so low, the fee savings can BE their profits.

The web is a constantly evolving entity. It's weapon of mass disruption and its got a bullet with your name on it (mine too).

You had me worried there for a moment. :) Hope you are well. All the best!

Owen, did you just steal the comedy line of Grandma Lee's last performance on "America's Got Talent"?

"...anxiety of Ryan Seacrest watching Brokeback Mountain."

Gotchya bro!

Did you think Kevin Skinner was worthy of the win last night? He'll be gone in a year, while Barbara Padilla will be headlining the most prestigious concert halls all over the world, yes?

As far as "direct navigation" taking a hit, the parking companies and ad aggregators already flushed domainers down the toilet in late 2008.

It's all end user sales, buildout with CPA's or personal products (ebooks can rock big bucks).

I credited GrandMa Lee the bottom but Hollywood is still so dump, no one thinks to advise these people to secure domains right away before their name becomes a household word that the investor will predate. Nothing to link to.

I'm with you on Barbara. But it's all fixed. She'll already have her Andrew Lloyd Weber stage part like Jennifer Hudson did and Skinner will work for Cowell for peanuts traveling the country until he ruins the wonderful simple life and family he had and ends up in rehab.

Meanwhile great headlines like Susan Boyle- ugly old maid and chicken catcher live their dreams!
