There are so many people so attached to their domains. Especially the dotTV zealots on NamePros.com.
It gets very emotional. Often folks are in denial. Sometimes it takes an intervention. But the balance in your bank account doesn't lie. If dotTV is the panacea you'll live it breath it feel it.
I am not purporting to the an "expert" here but am reporting the recent developments of REAL experts including Barry Diller, New York Times and Financial Times and dotTV is not mentioned once. Of course money can be made flipping premium dotTV domains.
But what I am arguing is that dotTV will never be the defacto standard for online broadcasting. NamePros members argue that 10% of the new subscription channels are dot TV branded. But hello, they are moving to YouTube because they have no traffic or audience on their own accord. Plus most are redirects to dotCom domains. Like Smart.TV = SmartTV.com (which, BTW, like with .me is a rule of thumb that the me or TV needs to be registered both left and right of the dot to work.
And without the YouTube platform none of these business models would be feasible because of the investment capital required to build a platform and host the enormous bandwidth required.
Acorn.TV redirects to AcornOnline.com. Most of the bigger ones are part of Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios: Cars.TV, Comedy.TV, ES.TV, JusticeCentral.TV, MyDestination.TV, Pets.TV and Recipe.TV. I was one of the first to report and celebrate Allen's acquisitions.
Now if Comedy.TV was owned by Viacom The Comedy Channel it would send a different signal. But it isn't and enough time has passed for the jury to be in.
Hate me. It's easier than blaming yourself when you have to borrow a dollar to tip the parking valet because all of your capital is tied up in dreamland.
I don't even know if Byron Allen would have tip money if not for his network gig because these YouTube channels have yet to show a profit.
But don't think you are alone. If BROADCAST TV is on life support, as AdAge reports, why would you think dotTV has a chance?
